The water birch is hardy in zones 8 and 9 and prefers moist acidic soil. When grown in the open a Northern Red Oak tree can reach up to 90 feet tall and 60 feet wide. One is red maple Acer rubrum. Although most walnut trees grow very slowly this is a fast growing shade tree that tops out at 40 to 60 feet at full maturity in a few short years.
